SD 07/09/05 - "Kangaroo Court" - As a starship captain, I've had many a trying time. But this is the first time I've been at a trial in court.
Melvin supposedly offered to be Lera's advocate, as well as I. But not surprisingly given her past history she chose me. I went from my cell to hers, passing Lynx's on the way. Lott and Tarra were there. But they seemed more interested in bondage jokes than her defense. I assume it's a kind of bravado mixed with condifence about Lynx's medical defense.
Lera, in contrast, seemed depressed, "No one believes me." I reminded her of our strategy of basing the defense on the original inviesigation that cleared her on medical grounds: a virus that caused symptons of Pon-Far among several Vulcan females on Risa, causing them to either go after males or assault females. Traces of the virus was found on her, as well as hormonal levels slightly out of wack, so the original investigation cleared her. I wondered she would go back to her old line, "She tried to eat me!" But she didn't. Guess she's realizing the seriousness of this and there's no time for kidding around.
It was soon time to head to court, and we were escorted to the room where the proceedings would be held, Tarra going with us. Melvin Orlan and Cosmo showed up just after we did, presumably as witnesses. We found out that the two cases would be tried together, with the same prosecutor on both. He was a Selay named Naro, and even for a reptilian he was intimidating, refering to Lynx and Lera as "lunch."
The judge then arrived, a Captain Ross. I think I recognize her as being from a race created by the same company that made Cosmo's Kitsune forebears before the Eugenics laws drove them out of business. She was a humanoid female with some kangaroo-like characteristics, with a reddish coat and dark red hair. Her otherwise mildly comical apperance was tempered by her serious expression and dark blue eyes.
Seems we have one civilian witness so far, the owner of the "Kinks & Giggles" shop on Risa where the incident with Lera & Lynx occured. Wonder what I can find about them on the PADD while I have a minute. Hmmm ... Ross has something of a record of being a tough judge. The prosecutor, geeze he seems like a real slimeball. This could be tricky.
Well the trial's starting. Let's hope it's not as tough as it's starting to look.
